I can’t believe I am writing this. I am deeply saddened to say that another lifelong friend just passed away. Bernadette Carroll. I know many of you know who she is.
I first met Bernadette in 1959 when our girl groups the Delicates and the Starlets were performing at Jersey record hops. We were 15. Bernadette had a fabulous musical career and was very successful in everything she pursued. She was the 4th voice on most Angels recordings including the #1 national hit “My Boyfriend’s Back.” She also became lead singer for the Angels in the late 60’s. She had an incredible voice to this day. As a solo artist she also had a national hit “Party Girl”, co-written by the late great Ernie Maresca, on Laurie Records. She, along with Peggy, performed with the Serendipity Singers. In the mid 60’s Bernadette, Peggy and I became another girl group, Jessica James and the Outlaws, and did lucrative backup work for Frankie Valli, Kitty Kallen, Patty Duke and many others, but most notably on Lou Christie’s hits ”Lightning Strikes” which hit #1 nationally, "Rhapsody In The Rain” and the entire "Lighning Strikes" MGM album. Bernie, as we called her, also worked with the great arrangers and producers such as Artie Schroeck, Charlie Calello, Herb Bernstein and Bob Crewe. She also worked closely with the Four Seasons. On a personal note, Bernadette was beautiful inside and out. We had many years together and many belly laughs. We even got to perform with Lou Christie a few times over the years. Bernadette, you beautiful gentle soul, I love you and will miss you; you will always be in my heart. Rest In Peace my dear friend. You and Lee are probably already singing beautiful duets together. xoxo |
